In a recent Wildfire Climate Explainer on MIT’s relaunched Climate Portal, Professor Alan Berger and research associate Jonah Susskind discuss resilience strategies for adapting to wildfires. The wildland-urban interface (WUI) is a focus of their research into settlement patterns within and adjacent to California’s WUI areas. This research is supported through an MIT HASS grant and aims to produce a comprehensive survey of physiographic conditions and development trends, in order to demonstrate the challenges and opportunities for urban designers, policymakers, and landowners in these high-risk areas.
