About the Symposium

At MIT’s Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism, we collaborate with cities to improve quality of life through design, urban planning, and architecture projects. This symposium showcased our long-standing collaboration with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the government of Mexico City, Mota-Engil México, and local leaders, which has resulted in a portfolio of initiatives to drive energy transition in Mexico City.

Our collaboration understands energy transition not only as a technological challenge but also as an opportunity to rethink how the city produces, consumes, and distributes energy, linking it to housing, industrial, and waste management policies.

Featured projects included:

• “Redesigning Vallejo-I: A metabolic approach to transforming the Vallejo Industrial Zone into a revitalized hub for industry, transportation, and housing.
• “Decarbonize and Revitalize: Visions of energy, equity, and design to regenerate neighborhoods in Mexico City, such as the Daniel Garza district.
• “Site Planning, Environmental Systems, and Energy Transition: Strategies for converting landfill waste into energy.
