Sara Mesquita

Visiting Scholar

Sara is a biochemist with a Master's in Bioengineering, who, during her Ph.D. in Global Public Health, shifted her focus from microscopes to a macroscope to study entire populations. As a visiting Fulbright scholar, she is doing part of her studies at MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning. Her research explores the spread of infectious diseases within complex techno-social systems by integrating human behavior into algorithms and predictive models. As a member of the Social Physics and Complexity Lab (SPAC) in Lisbon, Portugal,

Sara employs a vast array of data and techniques, ranging from search engine analytics to intricate spatio-temporal dynamics analyses. She passionately advocates for the role of Data Visualization as a powerful catalyst for societal change and the democratization of information access. Sara believes that Data Visualization can be a powerful tool in Public Health by significantly contributing to enrich its educational, practical, and communicative aspects. Furthermore, she is the co-founder of a local initiative, Data Visualization Lisboa, which fosters the growth of a community dedicated to the field of Data Visualization in Portugal
